Choosing to Live by Faith!

Habakkuk 2:4 – “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.”

A lot is going on in the world today and things are getting crazier. Every day, all day, there is “breaking news” and we are becoming less and less concerned about the activities in the world in which we live because it is difficult to keep up with them. (At least I hope that is why we are becoming indifferent!)

People are dying in the streets and there is little or no outcry about it! Politicians are only interested in keeping their seat and being the party in control. The Church wants to make sure it is not bothered and continue on as they are going. And citizens are so confused, hurt, and disillusioned that they no longer know what they believe or why they believe it. Things are a mess!!

But Habakkuk wrote, “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him!” In other words, “Look at these people who think they are untouchable because of their riches, their positions, their connections and their influence, their soul (their heart, their thinking, their “vision” of all that is happening, is not right!) Their pride has gotten the best of them!

In dealing with children in the classroom over the past few years, trying to help them work through conflict effectively, they seem to be more aware of the seemingly heartless times in which we live. So much so, they feel justified in their behavior because the “adults” on television, in the news, in their communities, and some times in their homes are living the same way. A life of pride where their soul is just not right!

However, God encourages us on four different occasions in the Word, that the just shall live by their faith!

Living by faith is not an easy task. Nor is it popular! But God is not concerned with what is easy or what is popular. He is still saying today that those who know Him are to live differently than the world lives. We are to live by faith!

I remember a few years ago the government made a distressing decision that negatively affected the Christian community. I was called by a dear friend and she asked me what were going to do. I told her that we would continue to do what we were doing and trust God with that other stuff. Although, there are still ramifications from that decision, I choose to walk by what I believe and not by what I hear, see, or feel. That’s the faith walk!

Today, as I write this blog, I am sitting in airport waiting on my flight for home. My flight was actually scheduled for later on tonight, but as we were eating breakfast and making plans for our last day of vacation, we received an alert from the airline stating that our flights were canceled.

Mind you, that last night I specifically prayed that we would not have canceled flights or delayed flights. On the way here, our flight was delayed three times. I didn’t think to pray at that time about that although I prayed about every thing else. So lo and behold, our flight was not delayed, it was canceled.

Instead of fretting, we declared that all would be well. We actually ended up with an earlier flight, immediately. This was great because my husband had something come up unexpectedly that he needed to get back for.

My sister met us here and her flight was also canceled. She didn’t get on a flight immediately. She was actually told that all flights to her destination were sold out. But we prayed and decreed that she would get on a flight.

After several nos and even being booked on a flight for tomorrow, we continued to believe God that she would get a flight out. And wouldn’t you know it!! She did! She left at the same time that we left and got home a little later than we did. And we all got home earlier than our original flights. Look at God!!

So how are you living when curve balls are thrown at you in this life? Are you frustrated and angry? Whining and complaining? Defeated and disgusted? Or are you choosing every day to believe that God is looking out for you and He can be trusted?

I get it! Living by faith isn’t easy, but it is a choice. I’m not successful in every situation at the living by faith mantra, but I am choosing more and more to make that the first way I look at a situation instead of the last.

Every day! One day at a time! One situation at a time, we get to choose to live by faith and not like the world-thinking that we can handle things in our strength and in our own way, like the proud! Thinking that we have to accept every thing that is thrown our way because of the powers that be. We can continue to do that, or we can walk by faith trusting that God can change situations around in our favor, for our good!

Today, we chose right! We chose faith! And God worked things out for our good and His glory! And it goes to show that walking by faith can be more adventurous and worthwhile than just living life and getting by in life. Wonderful Jesus!!

Moved By Compassion

Mark 1:40-42 -“Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.”

Recently I had the opportunity to preach and this is an excerpt of that message. I will try to link an mp3 of the message if you would care to hear it in its entirety.

In the first chapter of Mark, a leper comes to Jesus, bows down before Him and states, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”

In preparation for my message I googled leprosy and discovered that it is almost non-existent in the world today. There is a small colony in Hawaii with about four lepers in residence and a little over 200,000 in India. So it does still exist.

In the 1980s a medication was found to treat leprosy. It doesn’t fix anything that has been lost, but it stops the disease in its tracks. I am fairly certain that those attacked with this horrible disease are grateful.

But at the time when this event is happening in the world, there is no medical help at all. And the Bible doesn’t give us all the details about how the leper heard about Jesus or what caused faith to rise in his heart, but we know that something happened. And now he is before Jesus saying, “If You want to, You can heal me.”

Now lepers were considered unclean when Jesus was here; and this man probably had little, if any, physical contact by anyone other than other lepers. But when Jesus saw him, Jesus was moved by compassion and touched Him.

Compassion is birthed out of love. Jesus wanted to demonstrate to this man and to all those around that He came for love’s sake. Compassion is that reaction to a situation that touches an individual in a place that compels the individual to do something about it. And Jesus does that! He touches the leper and heals him.

There is a scripture in Psalm 145:8-9 that sums up the heart of our Father: “Jehovah is kind and merciful, slow to get angry, full of love. He is good to everyone, and His compassion is intertwined with everything He does.”

How exciting it is to know that God’s compassion is intertwined in every thing He does. The God of the universe so loved mankind that He sent Jesus, His only Son to redeem us from sin, sickness, and disease. (See John 3:16-17) How thrilling to know that He has already done what is needed to effectively deal with every problem that can arise against the people He love.

So how do we access this compassion in our lives? It begins with us going to Him believing that He wants to help us. But not only does He want to help, compassion for us insists that He will. Can we believe that? Listen to the recording to hear more about His compassion towards us. Wonderful Jesus!Moved by Compassion

The Great Deliverer

Psalm 34:19 -Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

In the Baker Encyclopedia of Bible, affliction is defined as:

“Anything causing pain or distress; suffering; calamity…”

If ever there was an individual who experienced many afflictions, the apostle Paul, was the man:

*He was beaten three times with rods

*He was stoned

*He was shipwrecked three times

*He spent an entire day and night in the water

*He was always in danger as he traveled by feet

*He was troubled by both the Jews and the Gentiles

*He had the pressures of ministry on him daily

*And the list goes on…(See 2 Corinthians 11:25-28)

But in 2 Timothy 3:11, Paul echoes the truth of the words penned by the psalmist, “And out of them all the Lord delivered me.” In all that he experienced, his testimony was sure, God was and is a faithful deliverer!

Recently, I was talking with a friend about some of the amazing ways that Jesus takes care of us and I thought I would blog about it:

Years ago, I went to the mall right before closing to pick up some items needed for church the next morning. When I came out the door, it was amazingly quiet and deserted. However, I noticed a white car with four men inside. They were closer to me than I was to my car, and so as I was trying to decide what to do, all four doors opened and they started getting out. Immediately I sensed they were getting out to attack me. Before I could think, a security guard appeared at my left hand side. He said, “Let me escort you to your car!” I was so relieved, and of course I began thanking him for his timely appearance. About that same time I noticed that all the men got into the car and sped off. I turned to thank the security guard again and to tell him I was now fine, but he wasn’t there any longer. I truly believe that security guard was an angel!

She shared this story with me:

She was on a trip with a friend. She went to be with her friend’s toddler while the mom was working. One day she decided to go for a walk and someone recommended a scenic area that she might enjoy. She got to the area and noticed that it was pretty isolated and she, the baby, and two men were the only ones around. She begin to feel uneasy about the situation and just began to pray in the Spirit and worship at the top of her lungs. The men left the area, her peace was restored and she enjoyed her day. You say, nothing happened to make her feel that way but the objective was to keep “nothing” from happening!

Another friend was actually attacked. They pulled weapons out on her and she in her nervousness began to pray in the Spirit. One of the young men shouted, “My mom prays like that! I’m getting out of here!” And they fled the scene and she was shook up, but all else was fine.

I could probably share a few more such stories of miraculous interventions, but there will be other times to do so. As I have been rejoicing over His faithfulness to us, I just had to share it! Wonderful Jesus!

When You Pray 2

Luke 11:2 -So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our  Father  in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven…”

In my last post I shared about the things that happened when Jesus prayed. For some reason, I never really stopped to think that all of what happened in His earthly life and ministry was as a result of prayer. And yet now, I see that it was.

Today, I want to look at the same phrase but to turn the spotlight on us: When we pray…! Jesus gave the following suggestions for when we pray:

*When you pray, go into the secret place..Matthew 6:6

*When you pray, do not use vain repetitions…Matthew 6:7

*When you pray, believe that you receive…Mark 11:24

*When you pray, forgive..Mark 11:25

Each of these suggestions (or commands) are powerful enough to warrant their own page, but for today’s post, I will just mention them. The secret place is where you just get alone with God and pour your heart out to Him. Vain repetitions are things you find yourself saying over and over again like, “in the name of Jesus, dear God, praise God, and other wonderful sayings that have become religious sayings. “Believe and receive” have gotten a bad rap by many, but if you don’t believe God will give you what you are praying about, then how can you ask in faith? And the “pray and forgive”..this is tough and I will deal with unforgiveness at a later time, but He’s pretty clear that we have to come to Him understanding that He requires for us to forgive others.

So what happens when we pray as Jesus instructed us:

James 5:17-18 -“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.”

*Elijah prayed that there would be no rain, and there was no rain. He prayed that it would rain, and there was rain!

*Abraham prayed for Abimelech and God healed him and his wife..Genesis 20:17

*Hannah prayed and received a baby-1 Samuel 1:27

*Elisha prayed for his servants eyes to be opened and his servant saw chariots of fire..2 Kings 6:17

*Hezekiah prayed and God added 15 years to his life…Isaiah 38:2

*Paul prayed and received his sight and direction…Acts 9:11

*Peter prayed and Dorcas was raised from the dead..Acts 9:40

*Cornelius prayed and salvation came to him and his household..Acts 10:30

*Paul and Silas prayed while in jail and their chains were loosed..Acts 16:26

I get excited just reading over these things knowing that I am praying to the same God that these people in the Word prayed to! Yes!

When the boys were lost in the cave in Thailand, a lot of people were praying. I was saddened but I can’t say that I was giving it much attention. Then I was in the kitchen when they found the boys and said they were alive and well but it would be a difficult task to get them out, and they were running out of time because of the weather. The burden for prayer came upon me to pray that all of them would get out safely. So I did! What a day of rejoicing when they all got out safely and it was called “miraculous”! Many prayed at His promptings, and I am delighted that I was one of them! When we pray!

Testimonies could feel the pages of 1,000 blog sites and never exhaust the wonderful news that God answers prayers. So know that when you pray you can cause great things to happen in your life and the lives of those you know and don’t know. Just do it like Jesus did: go into your secret place, don’t just use vain repetitions but speak your heart, believe that you receive and forgive others so that guilt won’t keep you from receiving from Him! Keep praying! Pray more! Never stop praying, because God answers prayers! Wonderful Jesus!!

When You Pray!

Luke 11:2 -So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our  Father  in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven…”

I think it is noteworthy, that Jesus said, “When you pray” and not “if” you pray. Unfortunately, statics show (I’ve often wondered who were the people they surveyed) that most Christians spend very little time in prayer. So I thought that I would blog about prayer.

What happens when you pray? Are your prayers being answered? Are they seemingly not being heard? Does nothing happen? Does something happen every now and again?

Today this scripture resonated with me and I couldn’t help but ask myself, “What happens when you pray?” What happened when Jesus prayed?

So let’s take a look at what I discovered about what happened when Jesus prayed:

  • Luke 3:21- the heavens opened while He prayed
  • Luke 5:16-He prayed often in the wilderness and the paralyzed and many others were healed
  • Luke 6:12-After praying all night, He chose the 12 disciples
  • Luke 9:29-As He prayed, He was transfigured (His appearance and His clothing changed; and Moses and Elijah appeared with Him)
  • Luke 11:1-As He prayed, His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray
  • Matthew 14:23-30- After He prayed, He walked on water and so did Peter
  • Matthew 26-He prayed and then He went to the cross
  • Mark 1:35-He prayed in a solitary place and cast out demons and cleansed the lepers
  • John 14:16- He prayed and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to be our Helper

This is just a quick list of the things that happened when Jesus prayed.

I am convinced that when I pray, something should be happening all the time. I didn’t look at every instance when Jesus prayed, but I am confident that He always prayed, and always got results! The Bible mentions in detail, less than 40 miracles that Jesus performed, but then multitudes were often healed when He was around. I believe He made such an impact, because He prayed often and there is much evidence to support this!

I believe in prayer! I’ve seen some wonderful things happen as a result of my prayers, the prayers of others, and corporate prayer with my church. God is on the move! But today!!! Today when I thought about all the things that happened when Jesus prayed, I found myself feeling like the disciples, “Lord, teach me to pray! I felt like I have not even touched the tip of the iceberg in prayer, when I think about all He accomplished after prayer. Wow!! I’ll continue this thought next time! Wonderful Jesus!

Happy Independence Day!

Galatians 5:1 -It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

What a powerful message for the Believer to grasp! Jesus set us free so that we could be free!! Now this seems like a simple message that everyone should easily grasp, but that is not so!

Paul is letting us know that when we were set free from the bondage of sin by Jesus, it was so that we could live free! Free from drugs, free from pornography, free from alcohol, free from lying, free from stealing…you get my drift!

In the Young’s Literal Translation it reads, “In the freedom, then, with which Christ did make you free — stand ye, and be not held fast again by a yoke of servitude;”

Some teach today, that we cannot truly be free or live free from sin or the bondage of sin. But Paul didn’t agree with that! He said we could, and we should! Christ Jesus set us free so that we could live free. Not free to sin, not free to do what we want the way we want, but free from the entanglement of sin. That’s why he encouraged us to not allow ourselves to get yoked again in the bondage of sin, because we most certainly could! But He gives us the ability to live free from it! It is our choice!!

The 4th of July is this week. Americans celebrate the day the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. They had to fight for about 5 more years to have Great Britain to see them as independent, but they decided that they were free that day! And they did everything in their power to obtain the reality of it and to enforce it. It wasn’t long before they were truly free from the control of Great Britain, but here we are hundreds of years later still free!

When we are born again, we are free from the power of sin. And what we have to do is make a conscious decision to agree with the “Declaration of our Independence” in the Word of God, that we are free! “Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed!” (John 8:36) Jesus said that! And then we stand against the forces of darkness that try to stop us from living out that freedom. We may have to fight (by walking away from some things, and staying away from some places and people, and fasting and praying, and attending church…) but we fight knowing we are free, not to get free! That’s the difference!

One is a position that says, “Devil, you can’t have what belongs to me!” I don’t have to lie anymore because I am free from lying; I don’t have to sleep with her anymore, because I am free from that…) The other is a position that says, “I’m doing all I can to get free!” (I tried not to lie, but I could’t help myself; I really didn’t want that drink, but my friends were all pressuring me…) The first position is a place of confidence in Jesus, while the other is a reliance on self efforts! I can tell you that self efforts, or flesh, is no match for the devil; but the devil is no match for Jesus! Hallelujah!

My fellow sisters and brothers in Christ, Jesus declared you free! There are several scriptures in the Word of God to reiterate what He said, letting us know that it is so obtainable in Him. He doesn’t want His family bound in any type of addiction or bondage. That’s why He died at Calvary! He wants you free! He wants me free! Yes, we may have to keep reminding the enemy of our salvation that it is true, but the Holy Spirit is there to help you to walk in that freedom. I cannot possibly address this isssue adequately, but I suggest a bible study on being free in Jesus; and there are some powerful messages out there on the internet. Just make sure the Bible is being taught!

Let this Independence Day, truly become a day of Independence in Christ. Then you can celebrate Independence Day every day! Happy Independence Day in Christ Jesus! Wonderful Jesus!

An Expected End

Jeremiah 29:11 -For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Most Christians have heard or read this scripture. I know it’s a favorite amongst the people I know.

It is a scripture often shared in the midst of confusion, disappointment and times of waiting on the Lord. In it, the prophet Jeremiah writes to the people in captivity these encouraging words that God has them on His mind. He is thinking good thoughts towards them, thoughts of peace; with a future and a hope in mind for them.

What I find interesting is that this letter was probably read by Daniel, Hannaniah, Mishael, and Azariah. Jeremiah basically tells them to live a full life while in captivity because they will be there for seventy years. They are told to build houses, get married, have children, and to let their children do the same. So in the midst of their captivity in Babylon they are told that they may as well get comfortable because they are not going anywhere, anytime soon. And yet, God has a plan to bring them good and not evil, to take them somewhere!

Isn’t it  interesting in life how we can find ourselves in an uncomfortable place or situation and we can’t settle down because we just want out.  Daniel and the three Hebrew boys, (as they known) were in captivity, not of their own making, but captive nonetheless. And from reading the book of Daniel, we can see they had a profound commitment to the Lord. But they were in captivity where it seemed that their dreams had come to an end. Then they hear these words from the prophet Jeremiah! “Use this time wisely! Build yourselves a family! Buy a home and get a career because I have a plan for you to bring you to the place that I have always had in mind for you!” (My own paraphrasing, of course!)

I have been teaching for about 13 years now and when I began this job, I prayed and asked God’s permission before moving in this direction. While it has not all been bad, I have never truly gotten settled in the job, thereby, hindering myself and limiting myself in what I am experiencing in my “career”. My heart wants to be free to do ministry work, but my financial situation dictates that I have a job. There are times when I literally feel as if I am in bondage.

And yet, even if it is true, God says, “flourish!” God tells me that He has a future and a hope for me. I like the KJV that ends this verse with: “to give you an expected end”.  That is my focus. The expected end. I am not where I want to be, doing what I want to do, but I know God has somewhere He is taking me.

Visions, dreams, words of encouragement all have me in this amazing place of ministry, touching the lives of God’s people like Maria Woolworth-Etter, Kathryn Kulhman, and Smith Wigglesworth did in the early 1900s. But my reality has me in the classroom redirecting disrespectful kids, creating lesson plans that rarely work like I envision, and jumping through hoops in a system that is designed to squeeze every ounce of our creativity and individuality out of us and the students that they can get. It’s challenging to see God’s plan!

And yet, because He is my God, my Lord, and my Savior, I choose to continue to trust Him. To believe that in spite of what I see, hear, and experience on a daily basis in the workplace, He has an expected end for me. And so my assignment is to flourish in my environment and demonstrate the love and power of God to those in it.

So on the flip side of the aggravating parts of my job are some real positives. I have touched the lives of many children in a positive way! Just this year alone, I reached out to a student who previously was tortured by the enemy in her mind, causing her to pass out when she was filled with anxiety. During report card pick up, her father expressed his appreciating, even mentioning that these attacks had ceased as a result of my relationship with her. Praise God! I remember a student who wouldn’t talk in public because of her intense fear of her life situation, but after a few weeks in my class, she began talking, interacting with other students and eventually shared what was happening in her life so that we were able to get her some help!

As a working woman I can identify with the vast majority of the world when I preach, understanding the challenges and frustrations of living out the principles of  Christianity in the workforce. I have real life examples that are constantly happening before me and with me to keep a spice in my teachings and sermons and help me to connect with the audience. I have learned how to adjust to different audiences as I have to teach different students, different grades, and different contents on a regular basis. And mostly, I have first hand knowledge of the real world experiences that are plaguing our society, keeping ever before  me that people truly need the Lord!

So! Am I thrilled with where I am at in life? Not really! But I have made a decision to flourish where I am at while I wait for God to bring me to my expected end! And as long as that is my heart, the “captivity” will be a place of “great exploits” and not a place of “deep disappointments!” Wonderful Jesus!

Will God Cancel Debt?

“Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.-Colossians 2:14

I am well aware that this scripture is referring to the debt cancelling of our sins at Calvary! I am a recipient of that debt cancellation and I am eternally grateful!

Recently, I have been challenged to believe that it means more than the cancellation of the debt of sin, but also the debt of finances.

I read it in the NASB, which is the version I have placed above and when I did it resonated in my spirit. God cancels certificates of debt consisting of decrees agains us! Wow! And I don’t know about you but I have debt of decrees against me: (mortgage, school loans). And let me go on record as saying, we are faithful in fulfilling our responsibility to pay these loans off! No one who takes out a loan should willfully forfeit on that loan. We are to honorable people before the world as representatives of Christ!

Having said that, I am becoming more convinced that God will cancel financial debt and I have heard many testimonies of debt cancellation and have even experienced it personally. When I was pregnant with our second daughter we didn’t have health insurance. So we paid the gynecologist and the hospital for a normal birth. Well, it wasn’t normal and she was placed in neonatal ICU. The bills were great! However, the hospital told us of a program where we might be able to get some financial help. When it was all over with, they took care of the entire medical bill and gave us all of our money back. Hallelujah!!

A member of my family was in college and had a huge student loan debt of over $200,000. Her debt was cancelled (meaning she didn’t have to pay it) when someone else paid it in full for her!

A couple weeks ago our church experienced debt cancellation in a similar manner. A lawyer called our pastor for a meeting. In the meeting, our pastor was given a check large enough to pay off our church (debt cancellation) and purchase some much needed updates for the building! Isn’t He wonderful!! The giver of the finances had never met our pastor, and he had never met that individual. But God can do whatever He wants to do to bless His people. Glory!

So, as I have meditated on this verse of scripture, I will reiterate that I fully understand what Paul was referring to, but I must say that I believe even more so today that God doesn’t just cancel debts of sin, but debts we can believe Him for! As a congregation, we have been paying our mortgage and believing for God to supernaturally pay off our mortgage! And He did!

I know people don’t believe in the prosperity of the gospel, but then, this is only for the believers. Jesus Himself said, “If thou can believe…!” Wonderful Jesus!

A Good Father!

Psalm 89:26 – He shall cry to Me, ‘You are  my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’

Father’s Day around here was a joyful event. My daughters insisted on us going out to lunch with their dad on Saturday, and then I had to cook dinner on Sunday for him. They bought his favorite pie: banana cream pie, purchased him some gifts and lavished the love on him. He’s a good daddy!! Although our daughters are all in their twenties, they are still daddy’s girls. It’s a joy to watch their relationship, to see their love.

As they were growing up, he was very involved in their lives. He took them to the park, helped with homework, took them to movies, sat on their bedsides to chat with them, and counseled them through life. A girl couldn’t ask for a better earthly father,

But the most important thing he did for them was to let them know that he relied not on his strength and wisdom but on the strength and wisdom of his Heavenly Father. He lived and continue to live a life that says, “Father God, I’m trusting you with this!” Again, he’s a good father!! Each of them have accepted Jesus as Savior and also know Him as Father!

As I have thought about writing my post this week, all I wanted to write about was two things: the father my husband has been to our daughters, and the Father God has been to me!

Over the years, I can say that God is truly, ABBA Father to me! I can’t imagine where my life would be today if I had not given it to Him so many years ago. Just like my girls, I love my Father! Our relationship is special to both of us!

We go for a lot of walks together! He listens to my quirky conversations, and my heart’s cry! He’s always there for me when no one else is. I depend on Him to counsel me, to console me, to straighten me out.  Just whatever!!

I can be myself with Him!! I don’t have to talk religious talk to Him or pretend to be what I am not. He loves me as I am while gently molding me into what He wants me to be. Who wouldn’t love Him? He is my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation!”

Chris Tomlin and Housefire sings a song, “Good, Good Father!” I love singing that to Him because He is so good to me, and has been all of my life.

There was a time I thought I had to serve Him so He wouldn’t zap me, but I have learned over the years that His love is tender and always available to me. Although I fear Him still, it is a fear of reverence, not a fear that says I am scared of Him.

I feel like I am rambling. But the bottom line is that God my Father loves me passionately and I am delighted that I woke up to that truth! So I thank God for the wonderful father that He gave our girls and for being such a loving Father to all of us! Wonderful Jesus!

There’s Another Way!

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.-1 Samuel 30:6

Whenever I feel a need for encouragement I think of this scripture.

David is heralded as the greatest king of Israel, but he wasn’t always loved and honored as such. As a matter of fact, he was a man who was often rejected, criticized or attacked.

As a young boy, he was sent to shepherd the sheep. And when Samuel came to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king, he wasn’t even invited to the dinner. Remember, Samuel asked Jesse for all of his sons, yet David wasn’t there?

And then there was the time when he played for Saul, and although Saul enjoyed and was soothed by his music, Saul threw a weapon at him.

David’s wife rejected him. David’s brothers talked about him when Jesse sent him to check on them. He was running from Saul when he was in Ziklag. He delivered a city and thought they would protect him, but God told him they would not.

Every where he turned, he was met with constant disappointments. And even in this passage, the men who came to him with no hope, who were now warriors because of his leadership, wanted to stone him.

Can you imagine this feeling of overwhelming grief and fear for your life at the same time you are experiencing heart wrenching betrayal? I can promise you at this point, I would have had a pity party! But not David! The scriptures let us know that he encouraged himself in the Lord!

He couldn’t go to his friends, they were part of the problem! He couldn’t go to his family, they had been kidnapped; and he couldn’t go to his pastor because he was running for his life. But there was One who was with him that he could go to and count on, His Lord!!

What do you think he did? I think he did the same things he did when he was out watching those sheep. I believe he sang a few psalms to the Lord, and worship the God whom he had come to love and trust in. I believe he took his eyes off of his problems and focused them on the Lord his God. And then he prayed and asked God what to do about the situation!

Have you heard the song, “Turn Your Eyes on Jesus”? Here’s the first stanza: “Oh soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There is light when you look at the Savior! And life more abundant and free! So turn your eyes on Jesus! Look full in His wonderful face! And the things of this earth will grow strangely dim, in the Light of His Glory and Grace!”

David could have easily penned this song for I believe it is what he did. He took his eyes off the problem and put them on His God. He understood the greatness of His God! After all, he killed the lion and the bear with his hands! After all, he slew Goliath in the name of His God!! After all, God had used him to turn a band of misfits into giant slayers! After all, he knew where His help had always come from, and so he encouraged himself in the Lord!

When you are young, I think you have a greater need to talk things out with people. But as you get older, you tend (at least I do) to talk more with the Lord! There are some things that happen that friends and family may empathize with, but only God can work out! There are some things that can be talked about, but only God can fix them! There are some hurts that only He can heal.

Suicide is on the rise. People are taking their own lives because of the hurts and disappointments that they have to deal with. David might have experienced the same temptation, but he didn’t do it. He didn’t allow his emotions and circumstances to dictate his actions. No! He went to Lord and found encouragement!

Please know that there is help in Jesus! He’s the Lord of all comfort and the Healer of all hurts! Oh how I wish that people all over knew of His great love for them. How I wish that we could all learn to encourage ourselves in Him when things get rough! I am praying that those who read these words will learn to find encouragement in the presence of a wonderful and loving God. Wonderful Jesus!
