The Lord is Good!

Psalm 136:1 – Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

This is a great day to give thanks to the Lord for He is not only good, but He is also so good! He is good to you, whether you admit it or not! He is good to me, and I certainly do admit it! He’s good to my family! He’s good to my friends! And He is good to those who don’t like me because He is good and He can’t help Himself! It’s just His nature!

The psalmist gives us a whole list of reasons why he believes the Lord is good! When mixed in with the phrase “for His mercy endures forever” we can tell that this is some type of song or doxology where the people repeat the phrase after the leader. But I want to pull out what the psalmist is saying and then at the end I will add the phrase back in.

Why is the Lord good in the psalmist’s eyes:

  • Because it is He alone who does great wonders! I’m thinking of a whole lot of great wonders!
  • Because it was His wisdom that made the heavens! He continues for several verses speaking of the beauty and majesty of creation. Six days! And here we have it! A planet created especially for us to inhabit! He’s so good! Earth is the perfect distance from the sun to provide us with light and warmth. It is tilted at the perfect degree to keep us from floating away and to keep us anchored to the land (at least that’s my understanding of gravity). There’s a magnetic field that surrounds the Earth that protects it from cosmic rays and solar flares that they say would fry us. I mean He created it perfectly for us!
  • Because He struck down the firstborn of Egypt. We’re familiar with the Exodus! The plagues He put on the Egyptians to demonstrate that He alone was God! How in the beginning everyone experienced the plagues, but He soon stopped letting the plagues affect His people! He is so good!
  • Because He divided the Red Sea in two that Israel might pass over to the other side. Not on muddy land, but on dry land! That’s one of those wonders I was thinking about!
  • Because the Egyptians didn’t have enough sense to realize they couldn’t stand before Almighty God, so they drowned in the Red Sea. There was a documentary on the remnants of wheels and chariots in the Sea. He’s so good!
  • Because He struck down the kings that opposed His will to give the children of Israel the Promised Land. Great and powerful kings. Living inside of walled cities like Jericho! But He caused those walls to crumble on a shout! Isn’t He good?
  • Because He gave them a land they did not cultivate, houses they did not build, and wells they didn’t dig!
  • Because He remembered them in their lowly state and rescued them from their enemies! Time and time again. One judge after another. He just kept on delivering them!
  • Because He gives food to all flesh! Miraculous provisions. Manna in the wilderness, and quail for days! Water out of rocks! Jehovah Jireh!
  • Then the psalmist interjects the phrase, that He is good because His mercy endures forever! It is God’s mercy that He continually extends to His people that makes Him such a good God! In essence, such a great God!

Those are some pretty powerful reasons why the Lord is good! But you cannot read the word of God without walking away from it realizing how very good God is. I’ll jump to some New Testament goodness to prove my point:

  • Because a Savior was born to us who would save us from our sin! The angelic host was so excited that they burst out of the world of invisibility into the visible world to sing His praise!
  • Because He proved over and over again that He is good!
  • Because He healed the blind!
  • Because He healed the lame!
  • Because He opened the ears of the deaf and the tongues of the mute!
  • Because He raised the dead!
  • Because He cared about a woman caught in adultery!
  • Because He delivered the demon-possessed!
  • Because He demonstrated a love for righteousness and a hatred for hypocricy!
  • Because He ministered to the poor, the forgotten, the ignored!
  • Because He gave His life for us that we might be free!
  • Because He rose from the dead and yet lives! He is so absolutely, positively good that it makes me want to shout and run around this room!!

I think you are probably with me! I think you see that God was good, that He has always been good, and that’s why He is still good and will continue to be good! Every single time He gets involved, goodness comes on the scene because He is just that good!

I can give you a list of all the things that He has done for me. We know I only touched the surface of His goodness in the Scriptures! But it is here, that I will allow you to take up the mantel of praise. It is here that I will say, now you take over! How has He been good to you?

  • Do you have a job? Whether you like it or not, you have one! He is so good!
  • Do you have food on your table, and clothes on your back? He is good!
  • Did you make it through the pandemic? Yes, and He is good!
  • Do you have your right mind? A mind to serve the Lord? He is amazingly good!
  • Are you saved? Born of the Spirit of the living God? He’s good I tell you!
  • Are your family members saved? His goodness knows no end!

Go ahead and give Him some praise because He never gets tired of being good. He never stops being good. He never debates about being good. He is simply good.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Wonderful Jesus!

Published by wonderfuljesus8

I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior and Lord as a child. Once, when I was still quite young, I knocked on a lady’s door, but I don’t remember why. What I do remember is her telling me that I was going to be a preacher. When I was in high school I preached my very first message on Job. It lasted for a long time! LOL! By graduation, I knew that I had been called into ministry. My heart’s desire is to see the people of God understand and operate in the Kingdom of God. We really need to know that we serve an awesome and amazingly good God and our adversary the devil has no good thing dwelling in him.
